Putin and Erdogan discuss regional issues in Sochi

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that during their meeting in Sochi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan exchanged detailed views on Syria, and discussed the issues of Afghanistan, Libya, and Karabakh.

Peskov made it clear, in statements he made, Thursday, that the Syrian issue of Idlib was put on the agenda during the meeting of the two leaders, pointing out that they stressed the importance of implementing agreements related to the region, and affirmed their commitment to those agreements.

On the Karabakh region, Peskov said: “The Russian side stressed the need for the parties to seek consensual solutions in the issues of border demarcation and the development of transport infrastructure.”

He also mentioned that Putin and Erdogan discussed the work related to natural gas and its transportation, adding, “Putin expressed his great appreciation for the timely and effective decisions taken by the Turkish administration regarding the Turkish Stream project.”

He referred to the high prices in the natural gas and energy market in Europe, pointing out that Turkey felt safe in the face of these sudden changes thanks to its infrastructure.

On the other hand, Peskov stressed that the continuation of military-technical cooperation and the issue of expanding talks on the S-400 air defense missile systems were on the agenda of the two leaders.

And he added, “It was discussed the possibility of producing some components of the S-400 system inside Turkey.”

He also pointed out that cooperation in the field of aviation was also on the agenda of the meeting, recalling Washington’s exclusion of Ankara from the F-35 fighter program.

And he added, “Putin and Erdogan discussed major projects on the two countries’ agenda, discussed continuing and completing the construction of the first unit of the Akkuyu nuclear plant, and talked about what should be done in general in terms of cooperation in developing the peaceful atomic energy sector in Turkey and building new units.”

The Kremlin spokesman stated that the two presidents discussed the possibility of cooperation between their countries in the field of space and the preparation of the first Turkish astronaut.

He noted that the two leaders discussed the issue of vaccination against the Coronavirus, and stressed the need to receive the vaccine.
