“Of course, there are damaged buildings in the city, but the damage is insignificant,” Elmasoglu told reporters. At the same time, the province of Hatay, in which the city is located, suffered severe damage as a result of the earthquake.
Recently, Roscosmos released satellite images of a giant fault in the earth’s crust – 200 meters long and up to 30 meters deep, which appeared after the strongest earthquake in Turkey in the past 84 years. Hatay airport also suffered heavy damage, the runway was only partially restored last weekend. In total, more than 6,000 buildings were destroyed in Turkey.
“We have to make an effort of will and build houses that meet earthquake requirements,” Elmasoglu said.
In some regions of Turkey, there are strict requirements for newly constructed buildings. So, in the province of Düzce, in 2018, a ban was introduced on the construction of houses with more than three floors.
In the comments under the video with the recording of the interview, netizens supported the mayor of the city of Erzin: “We need an honest and clear approach [к строительству]especially for the future,” wrote one user. Another commenter noted that the city survived purely by chance, as it was in a relatively stable area.
