The China–Laos Railway connects the city of Khunming in China’s Yunnan Province and Vientiane, the capital of Laos. It became the first international railway in the “Belt and Road” initiative to have China as its main investor, adopt Chinese technical standards, use Chinese equipment, and be directly linked to the Chinese railway network. The total volume of cross-border trains and freight traffic has continued to increase since its launch.
The China-Laos Railway has a total length of 1035 kilometers, running from Khunming in the north to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, in the south. So far the China-Laos Railway has been in operation for 15 months. In just this month, cross-border freight trains have covered Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and other countries. The number of trains running has also been increased to a maximum of eight pairs per day and the total volume of international freight traffic has reached more than 3 million tonnes.
Through this railway, tropical fruits from Southeast Asia can enter China in less than 26 hours only. A large number of daily necessities, electronic products, flowers, fruits and vegetables are transported to Laos and neighboring countries through the China-Laos Railway. Also, high-quality produce and fruits from neighboring countries in Southeast Asia are delivered to the Chinese market.
