NATO has taken a position that despite supplying arms to Ukraine, the alliance does not consider itself a party to the conflict. This has been pointed out more than once by the general secretary of the military bloc Jens Stoltenberg and other Western politicians. According to Szijjártó, this is a fundamental position. “We must respect this decision and do everything possible to prevent a direct conflict between NATO and Russia,” the Hungarian foreign minister said.
Through this prism, Budapest will examine any proposal that will be made in Vilnius, where the next NATO summit will be held.
Earlier, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry already noted the existence of risks of a new world war due to the conflict in Ukraine. One of the factors that could lead to such an unfavorable development of events, Szijjarto considers the collective supply of arms to the Kiev regime. Although individual countries do so, according to the minister, the bottom line is that such decisions are not made by the North Atlantic Alliance.
“Hungary occupies a unique position within NATO, because it defends peace, and does not increase belligerent rhetoric,” he had declared the day before. “We will not stop working for peace, no matter how much pressure is put on us, no matter how much we are attacked for it. Everything is very simple: peace is good, war is bad” , said Szijjártó. The minister assured that Hungary will support all efforts aimed at negotiating to achieve a long-term lasting peace in Ukraine. According to him, the Chinese proposals can become the basis of such negotiations.
