Kochi. At least seven Congress workers, including a secretary of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), have been taken into preventive custody ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kochi on Monday. Police gave this information.
District Congress Committee (DCC) president Mohammed Shias confirmed that seven Congress workers from Kochi West area were taken into preventive custody by the police in the early hours of Monday, including KPCC secretary Thampi Subramaniam and DCC secretary Sreekumar. Police said that these Congress workers have been taken into preventive custody as they had demonstrated with black flags earlier also during the visits of leaders of rival parties in the area.
Condemning the detention of Congress leaders and workers, Shias said they have no plans to hold any protest in connection with the Prime Minister’s visit to Kochi. He alleged that this is an undemocratic move by the Kerala Police. Prime Minister Modi will reach Kerala today i.e. on Monday on a two-day visit. He will hold a roadshow and participate in many programs during this period.
Modi will reach the INS Garuda Naval Air Station in Kochi at around 5 pm and will hold a roadshow from there to the Sacred Heart College ground. As part of preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit, security has been beefed up along the roadshow route with 2,060 police personnel being deployed in the city.
