Maya Khromykh: an angel with cut wings

On May 25, Maya Khromykh, one of the young talents of the Eteri Tutberidze group, turned 17. Like many of this mentor’s skaters, Maya is a promising young athlete with undoubtedly great talent and no less potential. Injuries prevent the figure skater from opening up. The latest damage could completely put an end to Le Boiteux’s career. But she fights for her right to be an athlete.

Maya took her first steps in figure skating at the age of three in her hometown of Nizhny Tagil. In 2014, the figure skater moved to Moscow and found himself in Khrustalny, but not in the Tutberidze group, but with Anna Tsareva. For four years, Tsareva taught Maya triple jumps. In 2018, Khromykh found himself in the group of Eteri Tutberidze.

For the first time, Khromykh participated in youth competitions in the 2019/20 season – and immediately won bronze medals at the Grand Prix stage in France. In Latvia, the athlete became the fourth, although in terms of total points she showed a better result than the French – 190.73 against 179.32.

She entered the top five that was to represent Russia in the final of the International Grand Prix, but the competition was canceled.

The last time the skater stepped onto competitive ice was in early 2022 during the Channel One Cup. She skated the short program perfectly, made a small mistake in the free program – but it was not fatal. However, after an injury occurred, which called into question the future career of the young athlete.

Maya understood this during training: she cut her arm tendons on a skate. At first it was reported that the damage was minor and that Khromykh would soon return to training and competition. But first she missed the Grand Prix stages, why – the Russian championship. In March, figure skater coach Eteri Tutberidze spoke about the injury.

“We got back to form, a quadruple, then a terrible hand injury. From the initial position of the short program, she pushed off, tripped, grabbed the toe with her left hand, missed the ice, and the toe rested on her hand. It ended very badly, there was a lot of blood loss, convulsions. She was taken away by an ambulance, then there was an operation. And not immediately, the doctors postponed it for a day to invite a special neurosurgeon, this injury was so complicated, ”said the coach at the time.

Khromykh also had to gain weight and had back problems. The figure skater could not fully work with her hand, she skated in a corset. The trials fell on the shoulders of a very young Maya.

But she didn’t give up. For the show “Lovers in Figure Skating” she prepared a sweet number.
