The United States called on Serbia to eliminate irregularities in the electoral system

The United States on Tuesday called on Serbia to address irregularities in the country’s electoral system after the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) reported irregularities in last weekend’s elections won by Serbia’s ruling party.

“Allegations of irregularities reported by the OSCE and other election monitoring groups must be investigated, and violence directed at election authorities, journalists, accredited observers – which we have seen reported – is unacceptable,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters. “We will encourage Serbia to cooperate with the OSCE to resolve these problems.”

Miller also said that the United States will continue to urge Serbia to “de-escalate tensions” in relations with Kosovo.

Germany has called election irregularities in Serbia “unacceptable” for a country hoping to join the EU.

The EU leadership said on Tuesday that “the electoral process in Serbia requires tangible improvements and further reforms.”
