PlayStation is testing cross-platform NFTs in games

March 18, 2023

The company filed a patent in 2021, but it was recently released. Sony wants players to be able to find NFTs in games as unique items that will make them stand out in online games.

The manufacturer presented a hypothetical scenario:

“The game has a unique skin that can only be found by one player or group. They will become the owners of this NFT and can use the skin in other games and on other game systems/platforms. »

Sony wants to allow players to trade NFTs, so even if you can’t get an elite skin, you can still spend real money to buy a digital item and use new weapons, for example.

The details provided indicate that Sony is preparing a new mechanism, and this system will also be used by other studios. It’s hard to say yet if this will be of interest to third-party developers or just internal PlayStation teams.
