In an interview with Sputnik Radio, neurologist, psychotherapist and candidate of medical sciences Olga Golubinskaya warned that various diseases can be hidden under the guise of chronic fatigue. She notes that ordinary fatigue disappears after rest, and this is the main difference between the body’s natural response to physical or psychological stress and a disease state.
Golubinskaya explains: “If after a night shift or heavy negotiations you have no energy, this is still ordinary fatigue. It disappears after rest: you get enough sleep, your mood improves and your performance is restored. However, you should consult a doctor if fatigue is constant and does not go away despite all efforts, even after a vacation.
If a person continues to feel tired for a long time, it could be a sign of mental disorders, diabetes or thyroid dysfunction, she continues.
“Chronic fatigue can hide depression, an underdepressive state (the initial stage of depression. — Ed. approx.), psychosomatic syndrome, somatoform disorder. Sometimes it can be hypothyroidism, c that is, reduced thyroid function or, for example, diabetes mellitus,” warns Golubinskaya.
The neurologist adds that depression caused by a health disorder, and not by overwork, can be accompanied by other symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, reduced interest in life, impaired appetite, when the patient either does not eat at all, or, on the contrary, attacks food.
