Ten years and three children later, the couple decided to have their genetic material tested – The results came as a shock to them

April 8, 2023

Celina Quinones is a real estate agent from Colorado, USA. She caught huge attention on TikTok when she shared a video in which she revealed that she and her husband had sent their genetic material to a company that analyzes people’s origins, and the results were startling to say the least. . Over 4 million people watched the video and the reaction was mixed.

Celina has now stepped away from People media and opened up about it.

“There are a lot of negative comments. It’s terrible. People just ask – Why would you do that? Why would you share that? But I take everything with a grain of salt. I’m a real estate agent, so I I’m used to being under constant pressure, so I just think – ah, that’s okay.

It was decided to send a sample for DNA testing

Celina married her husband Joseph Quinones in July 2006, just months after their first date. As usual, their families met at the wedding, but nothing untoward came to light.

“We ended up getting married, and even then our grandmothers seemed very similar, and they got along great, but nothing set off any bells.”

After 10 years of marriage, Celina decided to send the couple’s genetic material to MyHeritage and then began preparing a family tree.

“I ordered the genetic test. He came to us and we sampled and sent and all that. Then we got the results and I looked at the family tree that came out of the results and then I see it there. And I think, oh no.”

The husband was her cousin. As a result, Celina says she considered ending her marriage.

“I was shocked and quite depressed about it to be honest. But that was after we had three kids and all of them were healthy. They have 10 fingers and 10 toes, but that was just one shock.

Joseph said – Honey, don’t worry. It’s not serious. Just shake it. And I said – Should we divorce? Should we ever be together? Then I started thinking more and after a while I decided that we would just stay together. We couldn’t do anything about it. There will be no blood relations between us.”

I don’t know how related they are

However, Celina notes that she doesn’t know exactly how related they are. Genetic testing indicated they were related somewhere between the third and eighth generation, so the closest they could be related is to have shared a great-grandmother and a great-grandfather.

Celina says she’s still tracing their ancestry to try and find the connection.

Regarding why she decided to share this on TikTok, she says:

“I just didn’t think about it. I didn’t think it would go this far.”

But she still says she’s happy for the attention.

“I feel more free. That’s how it is. There are people who love no matter what or who, so why can’t I accidentally love my cousin?”

Celina would probably be in shock if she came here to Iceland, as it is quite common for couples to be related between the fifth and eighth generation. Should you start calling your partner uncle or aunt? Even if, of course, we put a question mark on the sharing of a great-grandmother and a great-grandfather.
