Actress/director Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect) will direct a new take on the comedy Girls Want to Have Fun. In 1985, it was directed by Alan Metter, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt, inspired by Cyndi Lauper’s pop hit of the same name. The screenplay will be written by Maria Lewis-Ryan and Ellie Romano.

The original film’s plot revolved around Jenny Glenn (Parker), who comes to Chicago to enter a dance competition despite her father’s ban. In town, she meets Lynn Stone (Hunt), who amicably helps Jenny achieve her dream of winning the pageant.
It’s still unclear who will star in the remake. But according to THR, it will “celebrate female friendship, humor and kindness, and dance prowess.”
