The fourth title for Filippo Ganna: The Italian won the individual pursuit tournament at the Track Cycling World Championships on Friday in Berlin after breaking his 4-kilometer world record in qualifying.
Ganna, who runs the road for the British team Ineos, beat the American Ashton Lambie in the final.
The Italian was credited with the time of 4 min 03 sec 875, almost 4 seconds less than his opponent in the final. He got up in the last meters without threatening his record established in qualifying in a time of 4 min 01 sec 934.
The bronze medal went to Frenchman Corentin Ermenault who took third place for young Italian Jonathan Milan (19).
Ganna, 23, had already won gold in 2016, 2018 and 2019 in the individual pursuit, a long-held benchmark event that was nevertheless struck from the Olympic program.
In Berlin, the Piedmontese climbed the podium on Thursday for the team pursuit (3rd).
