Mainz – The number of students without a high school diploma in Rhineland-Palatinate rose by just under 300 to 3,360 within a year. According to a calculation by the CHE Center for Higher Education, the proportion of students without a high school diploma was 2.7 percent in 2018. Rhineland-Palatinate is thus just above the German average of 2.2 percent.
Among freshmen in the state, the percentage of students without a high school diploma is 3.7 percent. Most freshmen without a high school diploma enrolled at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences (228) in 2018, followed by Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (169) and Koblenz-Landau University (114).
It is possible to study without a high school diploma for people who have highly qualified work, for example with a master’s degree in handicrafts. For example, the grade from the master craftsman or specialist exam replaces the Abinote. Completed vocational training and work experience are a prerequisite.
