Empty ranks and late French Open?

Puszczykowo – Angelique Kerber and Julia Gorges are also open to ghost games and the French Open in September on the way they hoped for.

Tennis tournaments in front of empty ranks are difficult to imagine, said the three-time Grand Slam winner Kerber. “For me, the fans are simply part of it. Tennis matches without an audience are anything but ideal, but as a transition to normalcy, scenarios must also be discussed that otherwise seem absurd, »said the Wimbledon winner of 2018 from« Sport Bild ».

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tennis tour has been suspended since the beginning of March until at least July 13. It is completely open when it will continue. The classic lawn at Wimbledon has also been canceled. The French Open, which was supposed to start at the end of May, had postponed its date from September 20 to October 4 and received a lot of criticism for going it alone. The US Open held on hard court ends just a week earlier, but it seems extremely unlikely due to the Coronavirus crisis in New York.

“If it happened that way, I wouldn’t mind that much,” said Gorges at “Sport1”. “Sand is gentler on the joints, which is why I pushed it in again and again.”

The 31-year-old Gorges is currently in Regensburg, the one year older Kerber in her tennis academy in Puszczykowo, Poland. Both keep fit with athletic training, but don’t play tennis. Kerber can also cure her stubborn thigh injury through the forced break. For Gorges, the unusual time could also lead to a rethink when it comes to the end of her career. “Actually, I wanted to play this and next year, but now you have to take a break to see how it develops,” said the Wimbledon semi-finalist from 2018.
