Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

America allows Iraq to import electricity from Iran for another 120 days

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has told the new Iraqi prime minister that the United States will give Iraq a 120-day exception to continue importing electricity from Iran to help the new government succeed.

“In support of the new government, the United States will press ahead with granting a 120-day exception to importing electricity as an expression of our desire to help create the conditions for success,” the State Department said in a statement regarding a connection between Pompeo and new Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi.

Washington has repeatedly extended the waiver that allows Baghdad to use the necessary Iranian energy supplies for its electricity grid for 90 or 120 days. But it extended the waiver last month for only 30 days while Baghdad was having trouble forming a new government.
