South Ossetian Prime Minister resigns over protests

The head of the South Ossetian Cabinet of Ministers Eric Pukhaev announced his resignation. The reason is the mass protests that began in Tskhinvali over the death of a local resident suspected of assassinating the Interior Minister.

Inal Dzhabiev was suspected of participating in the assassination attempt on Igor Naniev in mid-August. Later, from the pre-trial detention center, he was taken to the hospital unconscious and with bodily injuries, the patient died. After the authorities refused to hand over the body to the relatives, protests began. The protesters believe that Dzhabiev was killed by the police and the authorities are trying to hide the traces of torture.

On Friday, President Anatoly Bibilov decided to remove the Interior Minister . The General Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal case for abuse of power.
