Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) learned about Western attempts to disrupt agreement on Karabakh

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has information on attempts by Western countries to disrupt the peace process in Nagorno-Karabakh by provocations among Armenian and Azerbaijani nationalists. This said the director of the SVR Sergey Naryshkin.

“They are trying to convince the Armenians that peace in Nagorno-Karabakh is a defeat for Yerevan. The idea of the necessity of “war to the bitter end” is thrown in. Azerbaijanis, on the contrary, are told that the Kremlin “stole their victory” when the Azerbaijani army was one step away from taking Stepanakert, ”the ministry’s press bureau quotes him.

“The United States and its European friends, as always, solve their problems at the expense of the interests of ordinary people, this time – Azerbaijanis and Armenians. Americans and Europeans are not worried that their provocations could lead to new bloodshed and plunge the region into a serious military conflict, ”Naryshkin said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the negotiations with Armenia and Azerbaijan on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, at the end of October, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev proposed to stop hostilities on the condition that the refugees return to Shusha. However, according to Putin, this idea was rejected by the Prime Minister of the Armenian government Nikol Pashinyan.

As the Russian leader noted, Pashinyan told him that he sees this condition as a threat to the interests of his country and Karabakh. Thus, the negotiations fell through. Putin stressed that he did not understand what the threat was.

The head of the Russian state also noted that it was in the interests of the Armenian side to stop the fighting as soon as possible since the situation was critical for it.
