“The Green Middle East Initiative aims, in partnership with the countries of the region, to plant 50 billion trees, as the largest reforestation program in the world,” the Saudi Press Agency reported Monday.
The Saudi “Sabq” agency reported that the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council in Sudan, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, “blessed this initiative during a contact with the Saudi Crown Prince,” considering that it would benefit the region and the world, expressing Sudan’s willingness to work with Saudi Arabia to make it successful and achieve its goals.
For his part, bin Salman reviewed with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, the benefits of the project for the region and the world, the most important of which is facing environmental challenges and improving the quality of life there, in addition to achieving a reduction in global carbon levels.
Al-Kazemi stressed working with the Kingdom and supporting his country for everything that achieves this initiative’s goals.
The Crown Prince also communicated with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad and the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa, and discussed with them his initiative, and they provided their full support for this initiative and expressed their countries’ readiness to support all efforts to achieve the goals of the initiative.
The Crown Prince unveiled the ambitious program on Saturday, and it aims to plant ten billion trees in the Kingdom over the coming decades, as well as the cooperation with other Arab countries to plant another 40 billion trees to reduce carbon emissions and combat pollution and land degradation.
The agency said that the initiative also aims “to enhance the efficiency of oil production, increase the contribution of renewable energy, in addition to multiple efforts to preserve the marine and coastal environment and increase the proportion of natural reserves.”
The “Saudi Green Initiative” is part of the crown prince’s 2030 vision to reduce the kingdom’s dependence on oil revenues and improve the country’s quality of life.
