France calls for Libyan elections to be held on time

On Monday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian stressed the need to hold the Libyan elections on their scheduled date, December 24, calling on “all parties to fulfill their obligations.”

This came in a speech by the French minister during the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly, which is currently being held at the permanent headquarters of the International Organization in New York.

In his speech, the minister said: “There is now a credible path to restore unity and sovereignty in Libya.”

He added: “This path is conditional on all parties fulfilling their obligations, foreign mercenaries withdraw, the ceasefire remains in effect, and elections are held as planned on December 24.”

“France hopes that the UN Security Council, Libya’s neighbors and those with influence over the country will cooperate to achieve our common goal of completing the ongoing transition,” he added.

He explained that “this is the goal of the international conference to support the political process and restore sovereignty in Libya, which we will host in Paris on November 12.”

Recently, tensions have returned between the institutions of governance in Libya, as a result of differences between the House of Representatives on the one hand and the Supreme Council of State, the unity government, and the Presidential Council on the other hand, especially over the powers and electoral bills.

And the Libyan House of Representatives announced last week, the withdrawal of confidence from the unity government headed by Abdel Hamid Dabaiba, in a move that the Supreme Council of State considered “invalid” for violating its procedures in the constitutional declaration and the political agreement. Regular election tracking process.

This threatens the political breakthrough that Libya has been witnessing for months, when an elected transitional authority, comprising a unity government and a presidential council, assumed on March 16 its duties to lead the country to parliamentary and presidential elections on December 24.
