The European Union expressed its satisfaction that the regime of Bashar al-Assad and the delegation of the Syrian opposition reached an agreement on starting work on the draft of the new constitution for the country.
This came in a statement issued by the Office of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, on Monday.
The statement indicated that the agreement of the Syrian parties to start work on the draft of the new constitution is encouraging.
He added that the European Union fully supports the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, to make progress in the road map for a political solution in Syria.
The statement said that the European Union also stresses the importance of making progress in the file of detainees.
The statement also expressed the European Union’s concern about the recent escalation of violence in Syria.
And earlier today, the co-chair of the Syrian Constitutional Committee for the opposition, Hadi Al-Bahra, announced that the committee held, in Geneva, on Monday, the first session to discuss the basic principles of the constitution, as part of the process of drafting a constitutional reform.
This came in a press statement after the first day of the committee’s sixth round of meetings, which was launched at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, under the supervision of the UN envoy, Geir Pedersen .
The meetings of the sixth round of the Constitutional Committee come after months of suspension and five rounds that did not achieve progress, as part of a more comprehensive process sponsored by the United Nations, in the hope of ending the Syrian conflict.
In March 2011, popular protests erupted in Syria calling for a peaceful transfer of power, but the head of the regime, Bashar al-Assad, repressed them militarily, which pushed the country into a devastating war.
