Japan extends sanctions against Russia over war in Ukraine

From February 3, Japan will ban the export of vaccines, medical equipment and robots to Russia as part of sanctions imposed on Moscow for its military invasion of Ukraine. This is reported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.
From the same day, a ban is introduced on the sale to Russia of equipment for nuclear facilities, oil and gas exploration. Also, the list includes explosive detection equipment, portable generators, laser welding machines.
Export restrictions will affect 49 Russian organizations.
Japan has also expanded the list of personal sanctions. Tokyo freezes the assets of 22 people and 3 Russian organizations. Sanctions included Justice Minister Konstantin Chuichenko, Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov, head of the Central Election Commission Ella Pamfilova, Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova, philosopher and political scientist Alexander Dugin, among others.
Tokyo is also imposing sanctions on Russian company Irkut, JSC Moscow Machine-Building Plant Avangard and PJSC KAMAZ.
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Japan has imposed sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin, senior officials in the country and their relatives, banks and companies, and has stripped Russia of its Most Favored Nation status in trade. At the same time, Tokyo announced that it would provide military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
Russia included Japan in the list of “hostile countries” and announced that it was withdrawing from the dialogue with Japan on the establishment of joint economic activities in the Southern Kuriles. Russia banneda Japanese sailors to fish off the southern Kuril Islands. The Russian-Japanese agreement of 1998 gave them such a right.
