Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Brussels to plead for more weapons to fight the Russian invasion and to negotiate his country’s membership of the European Union.
Zelenskyyy is accompanied by his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. Later Thursday, the Ukrainian president will attend an EU summit and address the European Parliament, Macron’s office said.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted to welcome Zelenskyyy “to the heart of the European family to which Ukraine belongs.”
“We will support Ukraine every step of the way towards our union,” she added.
The expected performance is seen as part of Zelenskyy ‘s campaign to supply Ukraine with tanks, planes and missiles.
The Ukrainian leader is on a three-nation tour seeking support from allies in Europe on the eve of the first anniversary of the Russian invasion.
Ukrainian officials speculated that Russia would stage a new offensive in the east to coincide with the first anniversary of the February 24 invasion.
