The United States expressed “deep concern” over Russia’s alleged plans to destabilize the situation in Moldova and reaffirmed its support for the country’s sovereignty.
“We are deeply concerned by reports of a Russian plot to destabilize the democratically elected government of Moldova,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
“Russia has a long history of malign influence both in Moldova and the region, and as such, we are working closely with Moldova to build its political resilience and counter Russia’s longstanding efforts to undermine the democratic institutions of Moldova,” he added.
Price noted that the United States strongly supports Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“The recent Russian violations of Moldovan airspace during missile strikes against Ukraine constitute an unacceptable risk and demonstrate a flagrant disrespect for the sovereign territory of Moldova,” said the spokesperson for the Department of State.
At the same time, he added that currently the United States does not see any direct military threats against Moldova.
“We are in close contact with our Moldovan partners at this critical time,” Price said. “We strongly support the leadership of Moldovan President Maia Sandu and look forward to continued cooperation with the new prime minister and his cabinet once this government is formed. We remain committed to helping Moldova implement the political, economic and anti-corruption reforms needed to build the European future it aspires to.
