New Moldovan government sworn in

Moldova’s new government, led by pro-Western economist Dorin Recean, was sworn in as the country focused on security concerns amid Russia’s war in neighboring Ukraine.

Recean, a 48-year-old economist who served for a year as defense and security adviser to President Maia Sandu, was named by her as prime minister last week following the unexpected departure of Natalia Gavrilitsa.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Sandu told the new government that it had to lead Moldova through “a very difficult period marked by many crises”.

The president stressed that joining the European Union is the only way for the country to “preserve and strengthen” its democracy.
