Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay urged his fellow citizens to “stay away from damaged buildings” via Twitter. In addition, the authorities warned the population against approaching the coastline due to the threat of a sea level rise of 50 cm.

On the night of February 6, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Turkey. As a result, more than 41,000 people died, and more than 13 million were injured. The earthquake also affected Syria. The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, has called the earthquake in Turkey the biggest natural disaster in Europe for a hundred years.
