The military investigation department of the Pechenga garrison in the Murmansk region opened a criminal investigation against military doctor Denis Vasiliev, who refused to go to the combat zone. On this subject reported head of the human rights group “Agora” * Pavel Chikov.
Vasilyev graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 2022, he received the specialty of general practitioner and the rank of lieutenant of the medical service. In the summer he was assigned to one of the military units of the Northern Fleet. Immediately after the distribution, Vasiliev filed a letter of resignation, but did not have time to resign due to the announcement of mobilization in Russia.
Chikov writes that Vasiliev was offered to be transferred to the Franz Josef Land archipelago, which he accepted. However, before the transfer order was received, another order was received by the unit – that Vasiliev should go to the combat zone. He refused to execute it “for personal reasons”.
On January 20, 2023, a criminal case was opened against Vasilyev for failure to obey order during the mobilization period (part 2.1 of article 332 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The maximum penalty under this article is three years in prison.
* In 2014, a human rights organization called “Agora” was entered into the register of non-profit foreign agents, and in 2016 it was liquidated by a court decision. Currently, the Agora International Human Rights Group operates without constituting a legal entity.
