On Tuesday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, at a press conference in Brussels, urged Moscow to reconsider its decision to suspend its participation in the US-Russian nuclear arms control treaty START and said that “more nuclear weapons and less arms control make the world more dangerous”. “Stoltenberg’s comment came after Vladimir Putin’s threatening statement in a message to the Federal Assembly to suspend Russia’s participation in START-3.The START-3 treaty between Moscow and Washington, signed in 2010, limits the number of nuclear warheads the world’s two largest nuclear powers can deploy and expires in 2026.Commenting on Putin’s accusations against the West, Stoltenberg pointed out that it is Moscow that is the aggressor in the war against Ukraine, having launched an invasion of that country a year ago. “It was President (of the Russian Federation) Putin who started this war of imperialist conquest…and as he clearly understands today, he is preparing for a new war…Putin must not win…It would be dangerous for our own safety and for the whole world,” Stoltenberg added. In Athens on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Russia’s decision was irresponsible and that the United States would closely monitor Moscow’s further actions.
