US President Joe Biden will meet leaders of NATO’s eastern flank on Wednesday to show support for their security.
The so-called “Bucharest Nine” include Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. Most of them strongly support military assistance to Ukraine.
On Tuesday, Biden began his second trip to Poland in more than a year. He met with President Andrzej Duda, thanking the Polish leader for his support for Ukraine and calling the US-Polish relationship “critical”.
He underlined Washington’s commitment to the principle of collective defense enshrined in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty and assured Dudu that the alliance would react if Russia extended its war beyond Ukraine and attacked Poland.
“We reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to the collective security of NATO, including guarantees that the headquarters of our forces in Europe will be located in Poland,” Biden said.
