Russian court to hear for first time case against Ukrainian Armed Forces over mistreatment of civilians


The first criminal case in Russia against a member of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, accused of seizing power by force and mistreating civilians, has been brought to court. On this subject reported TASS at the Southern District Military Court.
Anton Cherednik is charged with mistreatment of civilians (article 356, part 1), forcible seizure of power (article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), murder (article 105, part 2), as well as than training in terrorist activities ( Article 205.3. Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
The court confirmed to the agency that the Ukrainian serviceman’s case was the first of its kind in Russia. His consideration will be designated in the general order.
Commission of Inquiry of Russia in June 2022 present Cherednik charged under Part 1 of Art. 356 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. According to investigators, in March, in the village of Mirny, Mariupol, after checking documents, a soldier forced two men to say a sentence in Ukrainian. Using incorrect pronunciation as a pretext, Cherednik shot one of them, the UK noted. The second man remained alive and testified at the inquest.
The court is also examining the case of Denis Muryga, a member of the Ukrainian Aidar battalion. He is charged with participating in armed training not prescribed by federal law and training in terrorist activities.
February 20, Chairman of the Russian Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin in an interview with TASS reported that since 2014 the department has initiated more than 2.5 thousand criminal cases on the events in Ukraine, a preliminary investigation is currently underway.
The day before, on February 21, the court sentenced two defendants for preparing sabotage on the route of movement of military trains in the Belgorod region to 3.5 years each in a strict regime colony. The regional FSB explained that the actions of the defendants were supposed to lead to the derailment of the train, damage to military and railway equipment, as well as casualties among the military.
