Spain will supply six Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine


Spain plans to supply six German-made Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine after refurbishment. This was announced by the Minister of Defense of Spain Margarita Robles.
“Now we are repairing six Leopard 2A4 tanks with the possibility – if necessary and at the request of our allies – of increasing this number”, son Robles’ words to Reuters. According to the minister, the tanks will be ready at the end of March – beginning of April.
How writing El País, Robles ruled out the delivery of more modern Leopard 2 tanks as they are needed for national defense. Leopard 2A4 – machines of an older modification.
The tanks that Spain is going to transfer to Ukraine have been stored at the Zaragoza base for ten years and have not been used for a long time, spoke Robles in January
In total, Spain has 108 Leopard 2A4 tanks, said Felix Arteaga, Reuters security and defense researcher. 53 of them are mothballed at the Zaragoza military base and need to be renovated.
According to an agency source familiar with the matter, some of the cars are in worse condition than others because they were used for spare parts.
The discussion on the supply of German tanks to Ukraine lasted for several weeks, in connection with which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed Germany for indecisiveness.
At the end of January – beginning of February, Germany announced that it would send Ukraine 178 Leopard 1 tanks and 14 Leopard 2 tanks. After Germany, Poland, Norway and Portugal announced that they were ready to supply German tanks to Ukraine.
On February 18, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his displeasure that the allies had to be persuaded to supply tanks to Ukraine, and only a few countries followed Germany’s lead.
