A senior US diplomat has accused Russia of violating the UN Charter and crimes against humanity.
“It is clear that Russian aggression against Ukraine is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter, and many actions in Ukraine constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity,” the official told reporters. Goodwill Ambassador for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaak.
She said that the war in Ukraine continues to cause huge loss of life.
“We witnessed the death of thousands of civilians, millions of Ukrainians were forced from their homes,” she continued. “Many have become refugees in other countries, and historic towns have been reduced to rubble.”
“While the epicenter of suffering is in Ukraine, the powerful repercussions of Russia’s war of aggression are being felt around the world in the form of reduced food security, disruption of food chains, supply and a brewing energy war,” Schaak said.
She added that the invasion violates the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity enshrined therein.
“There is growing evidence that these massive atrocities are being committed in all areas of Ukraine where Russian troops are deployed,” the ambassador said.
“Now it is important to note that concessions to Russian aggression and acceptance of its attempts to redraw Ukraine’s borders by force destroy the system of international peace, peace and security that has ensured the security in the world after the Second World War,” concluded Schaak.
