Google researchers note that they have overcome one of the biggest pitfalls on the way to ensuring that in the future humanity will be able to use quantum computing. They achieved this by developing a new system that controls the high error rate inherent in this technology, due to the fact that quantum bits retain their state and phase for a single instant in time. In addition to how its physical components are exposed to environmental influences. While the technology is only possible in theory or in very limited, controlled lab situations, Google has found a way to reduce the error rate as system size increases. Something impossible so far.In classical computing, it all boils down to ones and zeros. Each bit can only be 0 or 1, true or false. And with this storage and this way of working, everything has been created, from programming languages to video games. However, there is another way to perform calculations, at least on paper: quantum computing, in which bits are not binary. Google says it’s taken a big step by discovering a way to spread processed information across multiple qubits so that a computer can store information long enough to perform a calculation even if individual qubits are brought out of their quantum state. In other words, they give up many good qubits in favor of an excellent one. Information is encoded into multiple physical qubits to build single logic that is more robust, reliable, and capable of running large-scale quantum algorithms.”Under the right conditions, the more physical qubits used to build a logical qubit, the better that logical qubit will be. However, it won’t work if the additional errors of each additional physical qubit outweigh the benefits of QEC. So far, a high level of physical errors has always prevailed,” explained Hartmut Neven, vice president of engineering at Google. The team, according to their Nature paper, succeeded in developing an error-correcting code that, for the first time, reduces the error rate as the number of qubits used in a logic qubit increases. Also read: Xiaomi Pad 5 updated to MIUI 14 based on Android 13.
