The war in Ukraine should end a “cycle of Russian aggression” that goes back far beyond Moscow’s invasion a year ago, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told Reuters.
In an interview with the agency on the eve of the first anniversary of the attack on Moscow, Stoltenberg said the invasion was part of a plan that included Russian military action in Georgia in 2008 and Ukrainian Crimea in 2014. .
“We don’t know when the war will end, but we know for sure that when it does, we will have to do everything so that history doesn’t repeat itself,” Stoltenberg said.
“We must break the cycle of Russian aggression. We must prevent Russia from undermining European security,” he told Reuters at NATO headquarters on the outskirts of Brussels.
He explained that this means that Ukraine “must have military potential, a force to deter further aggression”.
