Under Secretary of State for Arms Control Bonnie Jenkins denounced Russia for suspending its participation in the latest nuclear weapons treaty, but noted that Washington would try to work with Moscow to maintain the treaty.
President Vladimir Putin announced last week that Russia was suspending its participation in the START-3 treaty, which obliges Russia and the United States to communicate regularly on the state of their nuclear arsenals, to authorize regular on-site checks and respect the limits on the number of deployed and undeployed warheads.
“Russia is once again showing the world that it is not a responsible nuclear power,” Jenkins told a session of the Conference on Disarmament, an international forum affiliated with the UN.
