ABC News: Another moai statue discovered on Easter Island in a dry lake

March 1, 2023, 05:28 – Public Information Service – TEH – A Moai statue discovered on Easter Island in Polynesia
There are around a thousand of these statues on the island, all of which are made of volcanic tuff, which is a porous rock. The tallest of the statues reaches about 10 meters and their average weight is three or five tons. However, there are specimens up to 80 tons.
The sculpture, which was found at the bottom of a dry lake, is smaller. Despite this, the discovery remains an important archaeological discovery, as it indicates that there may be other moai on the island that people may not have known existed.
This is also the first time that a stone statue has been found on the site of a dry lake.

“The Moai reflect the history of the Rapa Nui people. They were the deified ancestors of the islanders,” explained archaeologist Terry Hunt.
It should be noted that scientists continue to research the tools with which the moai statues were erected.
Earlier, scientists from Chile, Spain and Norway managed to find out what was the main reason for the death of the Easter Island civilization. Read more about this in the article from the public press service.
