Moldova and Romania have agreed to increase their economic cooperation in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine . Bucharest reiterated its support for Moldova’s application for EU membership.On his first trip abroad as Prime Minister of Moldova, Dorin Recean held talks with Romanian President Claus Iohannis and Prime Minister Nicolae Chuca on Wednesday.
Moldova is painfully affected by the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine, which borders Moldova and Romania. Tensions in Moldova’s relations with Russia have increased due to the war, as well as Moldova’s desire to join the European Union.“Entrepreneurs on both sides of the Prut speak the same language,” Rechan recalled during a joint press conference with Chuca. – Soon we will integrate our financial markets and the Romanian capital market will become accessible in Chisinau. I call on all businessmen on both sides of the Prut to develop their business and use all the (available) economic potential.Recean said the talks focused on regional security and that Moldova, dependent on Russian gas supplies, was considering signing a long-term contract with Romania for gas and electricity supplies.Chuca noted that bilateral trade increased by $1.2 billion to $3.5 billion and he sees further growth potential.”Romania will firmly support Moldova’s European agenda, economic recovery and strengthening security,” Iohannis said.
