Persistently high blood sugar leads to diabetes, which is estimated to have an estimated 34.2 million people in the United States.

High blood sugar occurs when the pancreas produces too little or no insulin, or when the body does not respond appropriately to insulin.

There are ways to control blood glucose levels, including avoiding some foods rich in added sugar and refined carbohydrates, and making sure to eat other blood sugar-friendly foods such as foods rich in fiber, healthy unprocessed carbohydrates, fish, and healthy fats such as unsaturated or polyunsaturated, according to Sputnik, quoting on "Mayo Clinic".

The worst foods that cause high blood sugar:

Nutrition experts warn "Eat This, Not That" A specialist in health and nutritional affairs, who eats the following foods:

1. Natural Sweeteners Like Honey and Agave Some people may try to avoid white or brown sugar if they are monitoring their blood glucose levels, and opt for something more natural like honey or agave syrup.

And beware that natural sweeteners also cause a spike in blood sugar, as the glycemic index indicates table sugar comes in at 65 (out of 100) and honey is just below that at 61.

2. Fried Foods Consuming fried foods can wreak havoc on your blood glucose levels. This type of food is often loaded with trans fats due to the oil used for frying. Trans fats can contribute to insulin resistance, which can lead to an increase in blood sugar.

Fried foods also increase your risk of high cholesterol, weight gain and the development of type 2 diabetes, according to Dr "Cleveland Clinic".

3. Potatoes Potatoes may not be the best food for diabetics. You don’t have to avoid them completely, but pairing them with some fiber or protein can help limit their effects on your glucose levels.

Potato risk for high blood sugar depends on how it is prepared, as mashed or fried has a greater effect on blood sugar than baked or boiled.

4. Trans fat foods There are many foods that contain trans fats such as processed baked goods, frozen dinners, microwave popcorn, margarine, and fried foods.

Trans fats can increase insulin resistance in a person if he has type 2 diabetes. This can directly affect blood sugar levels because insulin is one of the most important hormones in regulating blood sugar levels.

5. Fruit-flavoured yogurt Many fruit-flavored yogurts are full of sugar more than some desserts.

6. Packaged juices It is rare to find dietary fiber and protein in pre-made juices. A lot of those juices in grocery stores are high in carbohydrates, which increases your blood sugar.

7. Processed carbohydrates include white bread, white rice, potatoes, soda, and snacks such as chips and pretzels. To reduce their impact on blood sugar, don’t eat them on their own and instead pair them with foods high in protein and fiber.

8. Sugary Cereals Some of these cereals may be really high in total carbohydrates and lack both dietary fiber and protein, two nutrients that keep blood sugar stable and in control.

It is best to choose cereals that contain at least 3 grams of dietary fiber per serving and at least 3 grams of protein per serving.

9. Dessert No matter what kind of candy you choose, you should avoid it until your blood sugar is in a safer range.
