EP chief Metsola: negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership could start this year

Negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union could start this year, said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

Metsola is visiting Lviv on Saturday, where she met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy .

“When we say that Ukraine is Europe and Europe is Ukraine, it means that the accession negotiations must start as soon as possible. And that means hopefully already this year,” she said.

According to her, Kiev has made progress in terms of implementing EU recommendations for membership.

On February 28 last year, Ukraine formally applied for EU membership. In June, the EU Council granted Ukraine candidate status for EU membership. To be accepted into the organization, Kiev must carry out a certain number of legislative and judicial reforms. EU officials have previously called an end to hostilities a key condition.
