South Korea fills global arms shortage amid Ukraine conflict

The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has spurred a global arms production effort. South Korea, which has refused to supply weapons to Kiev, has particularly increased its production. Instead, the country has focused on closing the global gap by imposing strict export control rules on its sales, writes The New York Times.
South Korea’s mistrust stems in part from its reluctance to confront Moscow openly. Seoul is counting on cooperation to impose sanctions on North Korea.
Despite pleas from Kiev and NATO to send arms to Ukraine, Seoul continues to swing between an alliance with Washington and its own national and economic interests. South Korea has become a tempting supplier for Eastern European countries that have sought to modernize their own armed forces after helping Kiev.

Largest defense firm Hanwha Aerospace aims to triple its capacity by next year.

Earlier, it was reported that Japan and South Korea had agreed to cooperate on the issue of North Korea launching an intercontinental ballistic missile.
