It was conceived in 1923 as a temporary advertisement for one of the estate agencies and was due to be retired within a year and a half. Initially, the inscription HollwoodLand displayed on the hills. But over time, she has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Los Angeles and the American film industry.Although it is not so easy to get to the inscription along the steep slopes, it has been repeatedly attacked by vandals, so it is now guarded around the clock. Sometimes the symbol of Los Angeles was used for activism and public relations actions: for example, in 1991, during the United States Gulf War, the letters were replaced by OIL WAR (“oil war”).The inscription has been reconstructed several times, the last time in 2005, when the painting on the letters, which are about 15 meters high, was renewed.
