Hamad Bin Khalifa University College of Law, in cooperation with the University of Jordan, and the Association of Lecturers of Environmental Law in Middle East and North African Universities, organized the fourth conference of environmental law and policy scholars in the Middle East and North Africa region.
According to a statement issued by Hamad Bin Khalifa University today, the conference was held under the slogan "Biodiversity Law, Nature Conservation and Cultural Heritage Protection in the Middle East and North Africa Region"in the Jordanian capital /Amman/, and brought together educators and researchers from the environmental sector to exchange experiences on how to enhance the practice, education and implementation of biodiversity law in the region.
Through workshops and seminars, participants shed light on national, regional and international aspects of biodiversity law, including methods of teaching and practicing biodiversity and environmental law in MENA countries, as well as local and regional means of regulating biodiversity.
Commenting on hosting the conference, Dr. Susan Karamanian, Dean of the College of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, stressed that biodiversity law is a powerful tool that protects cultural heritage as much as it protects the natural environment, and through cooperation with the Association of Environmental Law Lecturers in Middle East and North African Universities, and the University of Jordan, financial support from the United Nations Environment Programme, "We hope to promote the concept of environmental law in the region and consolidate the pedagogy of educational programs in this field, so we are keen to continue organizing such conferences to contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Qatar National Vision 2030.".
For his part, Dr. Damilola Olawi, Professor of Law and UNESCO Chair in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, explained that this year’s conference focused largely on the important roles of environmental education and research in accelerating the preservation of nature and cultural heritage, especially in light of the major threats posed by climate change. Climate, noting that the UNESCO Chair in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development at HBKU, will continue to work closely with the Association of Lecturers of Environmental and Social Law and other regional and international partners to uncover innovative programs that will enhance the practice, education and implementation of biodiversity law across the region.
The College of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University continues to work closely with high-level local and international partners to help build expertise and research capabilities in Qatar and abroad.
