Germany: petrol prices are exploding, consumption too

According to an estimate by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (Bafa), 17 million tonnes of gasoline were delivered last year, ie 500,000 tonnes more than the previous year, and even 737,000 tons more than in 2020. Of course, these figures refer to the fuel supply inside the country – mainly at filling stations. But it also makes it possible to assess the evolution of consumption.

The possible dampening effect of high prices was more than offset by the easing of the pandemic and the resumption of travel. On the other hand, diesel consumption remained at a lower level than in the two previous years. However, here a significant part of the demand is not for individuals, but for the transport of goods.

Before Corona, the values were higher

If we compare the latest data with the two years before the pandemic, the situation is changing: in 2019, about 18 million tons of gasoline were delivered, and in 2018 – about 17.8 million tons, which is significantly higher than last year.

As for diesel, 34.8 million tons were supplied in 2022. In the previous years 2021 and 2020, these figures were 35 million and 35.1 million tons respectively, i.e. the difference is insignificant.

Popular Super E10

Apparently, high fuel prices have caused a shift in gas station preferences: Super E10, which is typically around 6 cents cheaper and contains most of the biofuel, has gained popularity with motorists. During the year, its share in gasoline supply averaged 24%. In 2021, it did not exceed 17%, and in previous years it was always below 14%.

The specific gravity of diesel and gasoline varies depending on the exact composition and temperature. One tonne of unleaded petrol corresponds approximately to 1,300-1,400 litres, one tonne of diesel to around 1,200 litres.
