American researchers have engineered a camera with the capacity to record the oscillation of atoms

Scientists from Columbia University, and the University of Burgundy, as well as specialists from Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory, managed to create a “camera” with a shutter speed of 1 000 billion times faster than smartphone cameras.

According to Nature Materials, this allows us to capture atoms in dynamics and statistics. Researchers have made a discovery in the field of thermoelectric materials that convert excess or “lost” heat into electrical current. The atoms responsible for such a process also fell into the lens of the device.

It is stated that the gadget works on the basis of a neutron source from ORNL. The camera was called Variable Shutter PDF or vsPDF. Another result of the experiment was the hitherto impossible tracking of violations of atomic symmetry in germanium telluride. It is one of the most important materials for thermoelectricity.

According to the media, astrophysicist Ronald Mallet began studying science after his father’s death in 1955, trying to return to a time when his father’s death could have been avoided.
