Italians have never reduced their diet so much before, but now they literally have to sit on a forced diet, said Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Union of Consumers (Unc).
Thus, he commented on the calculations of the National Institute of Statistics (Istat), according to which in Italy, in January, the total value of retail sales increased by 6.2% over one year. At the same time, in volume, there is a reduction in consumption of 2.4%. These results indicate a rapid rise in prices.
According to the head of the union, there should be no illusions: in addition to the usual increase in the cost of food in the country, a mirage is visible due to galloping inflation. The high cost and high utility bills are negatively impacting purchases, even for food, which by definition is most needed, Dona said.
