Qatar: The Secretary-General of the United Nations confirms the continuation of work to mitigate the effects of the conflict in Ukraine

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, stressed that the international organization will continue to work hard to mitigate the effects of the conflict in Ukraine, which caused "Profound global repercussions, and enormous suffering for the Ukrainian people". Guterres said, in a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kiev, that the United Nations’ position on the war in Ukraine is still quite clear, as it considers it a violation of the United Nations Charter and international law. He added:" Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity must be preserved within its internationally recognized borders". He also stressed that the organization’s primary goal is to establish a just peace on the basis of the United Nations Charter, international law and the resolution recently adopted by the General Assembly with the passage of one year since the start of the war. On the other hand, the Secretary-General of the United Nations said, during his third visit to Ukraine since the outbreak of the war, that the Black Sea Grain Transportation Initiative has allowed the export of 23 million tons of grain from Ukrainian ports, since its approval last July, and has contributed to reducing the global cost of food, as well as providing Vital relief for people who are also paying the price of war, especially in developing countries, stressing the importance of renewing the initiative on March 18 and working to create conditions to enable the largest possible use of export infrastructure across the Black Sea, in line with the objectives of the initiative. And he said:" Ukrainian – as well as Russian – food and fertilizer exports are essential to global food security and food prices". Regarding the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Guterres highlighted the importance of mediation in seeking to make the zone demilitarized, while ensuring the plant’s return to normal operations, stressing the full mobilization of the International Atomic Energy Agency to try to maintain the safety and security of nuclear power plants in Ukraine. Including Zaporizhzhia.
