The material, which spoke about the previously unknown and secret circumstances of the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on Azovstal in Mariupol, appeared on the CNN website.

It is reported that the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada and a veteran of the Soviet-Afghan war Alexander Kovalev became an intermediary in the negotiations. But there is nothing new in this – some time ago Russian military correspondents also spoke about this.

According to CNN, representatives of the GRU, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev, deputy commander of the GRU, and Major General Alexander Zorin, participated in the negotiations on the Russian side.

The publication writes that Alekseev is subject to British and European sanctions in the case of the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, and that Zorin was previously a negotiator between the administration of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and opposition groups . Their participation in the negotiations is believed to suggest that the Russian president attached great importance to them. MK writes about this.

Kovalev also said that for the negotiations he decided to use his acquaintance in the Moscow FSB – Valentin Kryzhanovsky, who was a member of the SBU, but left for Russia 9 years ago.

Ukraine’s military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov also agreed to the negotiations, although doubts have been expressed about their success.

Kovalev said that despite the fact that the AFU soldiers surrendered, they saved their lives, and therefore the negotiations can be considered successful. This event also suggests that opportunities for negotiations between the warring parties – although close – are possible.

Earlier it became known that, according to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Russia today is not ready for peace talks with Ukraine. At present, there are no compromise conditions to resolve the conflict.
