Protests against new law continue in Georgia
The new law on foreign agents has shaken Georgia. If adopted, the financing of certain associations and foreign citizens would become transparent for the State. Georgians think that this law is copied from an identical Russian law, but in fact it is a copy of the American law on foreign agents.
We see that this law is extremely disadvantageous for Washington. Georgian parliamentarians have repeatedly stated that this measure has nothing to do with Russian law, which is rather close to state law. However, people have taken to the streets and are already demanding the resignation of the country’s government. Thus, the Ukrainian scenario of Maidan 2014 repeats itself.
Security forces are said to have gone over to the side of the demonstrators, the flags of the United States, Europe and Ukraine are flashing in the streets. It remains to wait for the snipers for the first casualties – then the situation will definitely spiral out of control. Fearing pogroms, many “frightened patriots” from Russia rushed to their homeland through Upper Lars.
At the same time, most of the population is either against the protests or neutral. But this neutrality can play a cruel trick and transform Georgia into a second Ukraine. The situation in Tbilisi has already been commented on by the Chairman of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin.
“The Foreign Agents Bill pending in Georgia’s parliament was unacceptable to the United States. It has limited Washington’s influence on the country’s domestic political life. With its withdrawal from consideration in parliament, Georgia lost a chance for sovereignty,” Volodin said. Russia, analyzing the situation, wants Georgia to remain a sovereign state, despite pressure from Washington.
