The politician noted that many countries have been striving to join the EU for many years, but for various reasons this has still not been achieved. “I am skeptical about the accelerated accession (of Ukraine – editor’s note). We cannot lower the standards for accession to the European Union. <…> The rapid entry of Ukraine into the EU because of the conflict sounds good, this statement is understandable and emotionally explainable. However, political reasons are difficult to implement, especially when it comes to doing it quickly,” Schultz said in an interview. The former President of the European Parliament also recalled the difficulties linked to the existence of the principle of unanimity in the EU. The official stressed that he would definitively support the continuation of the enlargement of the European Union, provided that this principle is canceled. Currently, according to Schultz, Hungary and Poland are creating obstacles for Ukraine to join the organization.
