The idea of writing the word “Holocaust” with a capital letter was supported by the chairman of the spelling commission of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Professor Alexei Shmelev.
By making such a decision, informed in a letter to the Russian Jewish Congress (RJC). Shmelev pointed out that in most cases in official documents this word is written with a capital letter.
The professor also noted that the terms “Catastrophe” and “Shoah” are used in Russian to describe the tragedy of the Jewish people. They are also capitalized.
As previously reported, the Russian Jewish Congress called for correcting the spelling of the word “Holocaust” in dictionaries with a capital letter. They added that the term is used to define a specific historical tragedy.
