On March 27, the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) celebrates the World Theater Day, which falls on the twenty-seventh of March every year, with the aim of reviving this global occasion.
The celebration includes a symposium under the title “Qatari Theatre… Between Reality and Hope”, in which theater critic Dr. Hassan Rashid, writer and director Hamad Al-Rumaihi, and artist and director Jassem Ahmed Al-Ansari will participate.
The symposium deals with the beginnings of the Qatari theater, the difficulties that the playwrights faced in the beginning, the formation of private theater groups, the factors of theater flourishing in the eighties and nineties of the last century, and the challenges facing the Qatari theater at the present time, followed by proposals that would bring this theater back to the fore. again.
The seminar will be followed by a play entitled: "sea gypsies" On the stage of the Drama Theatre, and for the Qatar Theatrical Ensemble, written by Talib Al-Dous, directed by Nasser Abdel-Ridha, and represented by Faisal Rashid, Ahmed Aklan, Nasser Habib, Muhammad Al-Mulla, Mather Thani, and Rowan Halawi.
For his part, Mr. Khaled Abdul Rahim Al-Sayed, Director of the Events and Cultural Affairs Department at the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) said: The Qatari theater has a significant legacy that extends back nearly five decades, as the State of Qatar is one of the first Gulf countries in which theater had a strong presence. In the cultural arena, which confirms that the Qatari society enjoys a high artistic taste, indicating that Katara sought to invest its exhibition halls equipped with the latest technologies, such as the opera house, drama theater and open-air theater, in creating a theatrical movement that continues throughout the year. In 2017, the Katara Theater activities were launched, which are concerned with revitalizing the theater by holding many theatrical events, including international plays, and community theatre. The desired theatrical movement also includes partnerships with Arab and Gulf countries.
It should be noted that theater is one of the important cultural tools on which the General Organization of the Cultural Village relies a lot in achieving its vision of global leadership in multiple cultural activities by providing a platform on which people from all over the world meet and share their vibrant culture. According to Katara cultural index statistics for the period from January to December 2022, Katara presented 82 live theatrical performances.
